The findings suggest no significant differences in lactoferrin concentrations between periodontal health groups. Could the authors discuss whether factors like oral hygiene habits or dietary intake were considered as potential confounders?

The study concludes that lactoferrin may not be a reliable biomarker for periodontal disease in Down syndrome individuals. Were any alternative salivary biomarkers, such as MMPs or cytokines, explored in parallel to strengthen this conclusion?
